Benefits of Milk
Dairy milk has a variety of vitamins, minerals, and protein. Calcium helps build healthy bones and teeth. Additionally, phosphorus helps strengthen tooth enamel. Most milk today is fortified with vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium. Casein, a milk protein, fights tooth decay by sticking to your enamel.
Keep in mind that milk does contain sugar, so if your child likes to drink a cup before bed, be sure they brush and floss their teeth after.
How Much Milk Do Kids Need?
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 24 ounces of milk a day, but every child’s nutritional needs and preferences are different. While a picky eater might need 24 ounces to get enough nutrients, a child with a varied diet may not need so much. This is because milk is not the only source of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D. Dark leafy greens, almonds, egg yolks, poultry, fish, and other dairy products like cheese and yogurt also contain tooth-strengthening nutrients.
Talk to your pediatrician about how much milk is right for your child. If your child has a dairy allergy or if you live a vegan lifestyle, look for fortified plant milks, such as almond milk, oat milk, and soy milk.
