Different Types of Dentists

August 26, 2021 4:26 pm

Not all dentists are alike! In fact, many of them pursue specialized training for specific needs or age groups. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at some of the different types of dentists so you can decide which one is best for your child’s needs.

General Dentist

A general dentist has earned a 4-year undergraduate degree plus a 4-year dental doctorate degree. They are trained to identify and treat a wide range of dental issues. Some general dentists limit their practice to a certain age group or have additional specialty training beyond their dental degree. Additionally, all general dentists are expected to stay up-to-date with continuing education courses.

Pediatric Dentist

A pediatric dentist specializes in providing comprehensive preventive and restorative oral healthcare for infants, children, and teens.

Baby teeth are a temporary but very important part of a person’s oral healthcare development. Pediatric dentists have the training and experience to understand how to care for the developing teeth, gums, and jaw during this unique time. Pediatric dentists are also skilled at helping young patients with special needs or difficulty communicating feel comfortable and safe during treatment.

Our team at Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics is comprised of experienced, compassionate pediatric dentists who have extensive training and experience to help your child maintain a healthy mouth!

Orthodontist

An orthodontist completes additional training to identify, prevent, and treat misalignment of the teeth, jaw, and bite through braces, clear aligners, retainers, expanders, and other special oral appliances.

Tots to Teens offers orthodontic treatment as part of our comprehensive services!

Periodontist

A periodontist specializes in issues that pertain to the gums, which support and surround the teeth.

Endodontist

An endodontist specializes in issues that pertain to the dental pulp of the tooth and tooth roots. They perform root canal therapy to remove infected and damaged tissue around a tooth’s nerve.
