Am I Brushing My Teeth Too Hard?
February 27, 2021 2:42 pmIf you want to avoid dental disease and keep your teeth clean and healthy, follow these tips to establish effective brushing technique.
- Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush
- Brush in Gentle Circles
- Brush Twice a Day for Two Minutes Each Time
- Remember Your Tongue
- Floss Every Day
Use a toothbrush with soft bristles, which will clean your teeth and gums without damaging them. Whether you choose a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush is based on your personal preference and budget.
A manual toothbrush can effectively clean your teeth if you brush with proper technique and for a full two minutes each time. However, many patients find electric toothbrushes are easier to handle and more enjoyable to use since they take over much of the “work” of brushing. Electric toothbrushes can be especially helpful for children, patients with special needs, and seniors with limited mobility.
If you notice receding gums or sensitive teeth, you may be brushing too hard. Don’t brush your teeth in an aggressive sawing motion. Instead of brushing quickly back-and-forth, brush in gentle circles. When you brush too hard on your teeth, you run the risk of damaging your enamel and your gums, which can actually bring about more problems for your teeth.
It can be easy to rush through brushing your teeth. But we recommend brushing your teeth twice a day for a full two minutes each time. Watch the clock, set a timer, or choose an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.
Don’t forget to brush your tongue! This is another place in your mouth that bacteria and food particles can accumulate. Additionally, regularly check your tongue for abnormal patches, sores, and full mobility.
You should floss your teeth at least once a day to remove debris from between your teeth and under the gumline. Daily flossing is a critical part of preventing tooth decay, bad breath, and gum disease!
